About the USO
The USO strengthens America’s military service members by keeping them connected to family, home and country, throughout their service to the nation.
Since 1941, the USO has been the nation’s leading organization to serve the men and women in the U.S. military, and their families, throughout their time in uniform. From the moment they join, through their assignments and deployments, and as they transition back to their communities, the USO is always by their side.
The USO is not part of the federal government. A congressionally chartered, private nonprofit organization, the USO relies on the generosity of individuals, organizations and corporations to support our activities, and is powered by a family of volunteers to accomplish our mission.
About Military Appreciation Month
365 days a year, 7 days a week and 24 hours a day, members of the U.S. military are on call around the world, defending the interests and security of the nation.
May is Military Appreciation Month and is the perfect opportunity to express gratitude to America's military service members and their families for all that they do every day.
In 1999, the United States Senate passed a resolution proclaiming May as Military Appreciation Month, reminding Americans to celebrate this patriotic month that pays by paying tribute to those who have sacrificed so much for our freedom, and the American people continue to recognize May as Military Appreciation Month.
Although the entire month is designated to honoring past and present military members and their families, there are several, specific military holidays sprinkled throughout Military Appreciation Month itself, including Loyalty Day, VE Day, Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Mother’s Day, Armed Forces Day, Memorial Day, and others.

Armed Forces Day
May 20, 2023
Armed Forces Day is celebrated on the third Saturday in May, and it is the day Americans celebrate all of their military forces.
Unlike Veterans Day, which honors those who have previously served, and unlike Memorial Day, which honors those who died while serving, Armed Forces Day is the proper day to honor all men and women in uniform - both those currently serving and those who have previously served to defend our freedom.
Celebrate Armed Forces Day this year by thanking and supporting service members. Share our USO social media image.
Memorial Day
May 29, 2023
Memorial Day, which is celebrated on the last Monday in May, honors service members who have died in military service to the nation. Many American families choose to pay tribute to fallen service members on the day by visiting veterans cemeteries or memorials.
